Trace4EU
The traceability of data, documents, and physical goods are essential in many fields. Therefore, the traceability use case
was one of the first developed by the EBP (from 2018 on).
Traceability use cases and applications enable EBSI and other
blockchain-based electronic ledgers to be used and applied in many domains. The general objective of this project is to create an “umbrella architecture” based on existing EBSI services. The architecture builds the basis for the realization of traceability application scenarios. Furthermore, TRACE4EU focuses on engagement with pan-European stakeholders and promotion of recommendations for further development of the EBSI eco-system.
As a result, TRACE4EU can significantly influence traditional industries and contribute to their transition to more efficient, productive, competitive, and resilient ones. It will also strengthen transparency in the European area for citizens, who can better and proactively
track the flow of commodities and data through future traceability implementations.
The umbrella architecture will be derived from the work on multiple scenarios, including analyzing requirements for traceability applications of tangible and intangible assets that work in local and cross-border settings.
Objectives and activities
The European Union has set itself the goal of strengthening its member states’ economic and social cohesion. Achieving the EU’s goal requires a digital transformation and creating many digital services that function across borders and operate openly, transparently, and securely. One technical candidate for achieving these goals is using Blockchains and Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT). Here, multiple distributed servers hold the same data, and a consensus mechanism decides which additional data will be added. Data updates are grouped into blocks, and each block references the state of the previous block, which means that no data can usually be manipulated after the write operation.
The European Commission (EC), EU Member States, Norway, and Liechtenstein have recognized the potential of this technology. They have jointly established the European Blockchain Partnership (EBP), developing and operating the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI). The goal of EBSI is to enable the development of digital trusted services based on DLT technology for cooperation across national borders. As part of the “Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL),” the EU promotes using and implementing digital technologies. This project, TRACE4EU, will address and investigate several application scenarios for document traceability and implement them with the help of EBSI services. In this context, it will extend, improve and mature the architecture of EBSI to promote its useability as a production environment.

The TRACE4EU consortium comprising 30 partners from 14 countries to best meet the calls’ objectives. The partners are from 9 research institutions, 15 small and medium-sized enterprises, and six government bodies. Most of the partners have experience with EBSI because of the participation of early adopters in waves one and two. Furthermore, TRACE4EU has experienced EBSI node providers. The TRACE4EU partners are continuously in contact with EBP members, the EBSI core team, and pilot projects. With 13 countries involved in the consortium, we will have a large-scale implementation throughout the European ecosystem to meet the DEP ambitions.
